The Boston Bruins spent the offseason trying to sign their star goalie, Jeremy Swayman, to a new contract. It took a lot longer than expected, though The Bruins and Swayman finally agreed to the terms of the transaction.
While signing Sway to a long-term contract, the Bruins turned their attention to their captain, who is in the final year of his deal. Brad Marchand said before he did it never speak in public about his negotiations, but things seem to be going well.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliott Friedman in saturday’s headlines, Marchand and the Bruins are close to an extension.
“The Bruins and Marchand are close to an extension,” Friedman said. “It’s expected to be three years.”
Three more years could take Marchand to 39 and make him a Bruin for life.
Not only are the two sides making progress, but a deal could be in the works soon.
“We’ll see what happens going forward,” Friedman said. “Word is they’re getting close.”
Marchand was originally a third-round pick (71st overall) of the Bruins in 2006. He made his NHL debut in the 2009–10 season and played 1,038 NHL games with Boston.
During this time, Marchan scored 402 goals, gave 533 assists and scored 935 points. The three-year deal cements him as a career 1,000-point hitter.
Marchand was a part of the Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup team and was a key contributor. It was his first full season in the NHL, and in 25 games played during that playoff run, he had 19 points (11G-8A).
Through nine games of the 2024-25 season, Marchand is off to a somewhat slow start with just one goal and four assists. It is not far many off-season operations, so he should find a good groove soon.
Marchand was named captain of the Bruins ahead of the 2023-24 season. The four-time All-Star will look to add at least one more deep playoff run with a strong Bruins team before calling it a career.
