LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani He partially dislocated his left shoulder during the seventh inning of Saturday’s Game 2 World Series against the New York Yankees when he tried to steal second base.

Ohtani’s status for Monday’s Game 3 in New York is unknown. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani had “a little soreness in his left shoulder blade” and would undergo a physical exam Saturday night or Sunday.

Ohtani made a left-hander after being tagged by Anthony Volpe for the final out in the first inning. He lay next to the bag for a few minutes before being picked up by the coaches and carted off the field.

“We’ll know more in the next couple of days,” Roberts said. “The power was incredible. Range of motion is good. So we are encouraged. But obviously I can’t speculate as we haven’t received the scan yet. So once we get the scan we will know more. Again, strong, good range of motion, that’s definitely a positive.”

The Dodgers lasted 4-2 win and took a 2-0 series lead.

The Japanese slugger — and presumptive National League MVP — was 0 for 3 with a walk in the game. He is 1-for-8 in the first two games of the Fall Classic and is hitting .260 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in his first postseason in the majors.

“It was difficult. You never like to see the best player in the game get hurt like that,” Yankees superstar Aaron Judge said. “There’s going to be a lot of trying to steal a base and stuff like that. But I hope it’s all good news. We’ll see what happens.”

Oktani was one of the few players on the Dodgers roster to go through the season without a serious injury. The pitching staff is beset by injuries, with nearly every member of the rotation spending time on the injured list.

Among the position players, Mookie Betts is out for nearly two months with a broken left hand, and Max Muncie is out for nearly half the season with a strained right oblique. Freddie Freeman will play the postseason with a severely sprained right ankle.

Betts is optimistic the Dodgers will persevere if Ohtani is sidelined, especially after the team overcame its injuries to record the most wins in the majors during the regular season and reach the World Series for the fourth time in eight seasons.

“We have a great group of guys here and I think we can take care of the business with confidence. I believe in all of us,” Betts said.

Most of Ohtani’s injuries since arriving in the majors in 2018 have been impact-related, including major right elbow surgeries in 2018 and last year. The two-way phenom didn’t appear this year, but became the first player in major league history with at least 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a season.

In September 2019, he underwent surgery on his left kneecap due to a rare condition. The procedure was on her bilateral patella, or kneecap, which was made up of two parts that were not fused at birth.

Ohtani missed the 2017 World Baseball Classic after undergoing ankle surgery following an injury sustained during the 2016 Japan Series.

“When you have a group like that, they picked me up when I was down. We will try to do the same for him,” said Freeman.
