EXCLUSIVE: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired the US and Canadian distribution rights to the Italian box office hit. There’s still tomorrow (C’è Ancora Domani). It will hit select theaters starting January 17.
The women’s rights drama, which opens in October 2023 in its home market from multi-line Paola Cortellesi, is set to become the year’s most-watched film, surpassing both Hollywood blockbusters. Barbie and Oppenheimer. With a box office north of $36 million, it is the fifth-highest-grossing Italian film of all time, the third-best domestic performance of the decade, and the most successful Italian film directed by a woman. In post-war Rome in the 1940s, There’s still tomorrow tells the story of Delia (Cortellesi), a working-class wife and mother in a toxic marriage. American GIs still patrol the streets, but change is in the air. Things are still the same for Delia, her romantic imaginations begin to embrace her roles as dutiful wife and loving mother, despite the sarcastic nagging and outright physical abuse of her abusive husband Ivano (Valerio Mastandrea).
His effeminacy is surpassed only by his bedridden father, whose care devolves on Delia among his countless other chores and odd jobs. Delia sees her daughter Marcela’s (Romana Maggiora Vergano) falling out with her middle-class boyfriend as her chance to avoid the same fate. But everything changes when a mysterious letter arrives, and Delia’s courage awakens, and she begins to strive for a better life, not just for herself.
Cortellesi, who co-wrote the film, shot on the streets of Testaccio and in Cinecittà. There’s still tomorrow premiered as the opening act at the 2023 Rome Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award, followed by six David di Donatello Awards. Its international awards include the Dragon Award for Best International Film at the 2024 Gothenburg Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Sydney Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Norwegian International Film Festival and the Audience Award at the eighth edition of the Pingyao International Film Festival.
